January 5, 2024

Dear WIS Families,

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. It looks like the winter weather is finally here. I have included a reminder of our winter weather guidelines for your reference so the students are ready for fun in the snow.

Here are some other updates:

Security Staff Update

Please join me in welcoming Jim Potenziani to WIS as the newest member of our security specialist team. He started in the district on Friday, January 5.  Mr. Potenziani is the floater, primarily working at Hurlbutt and the Intermediate School.  His first day at WIS will be Monday.

Mr. Potenziani is a graduate of Danbury High School and went on to become an EMT. He was employed in the medical transportation field for several years before starting his security career in 2014. Mr. Potenziani has extensive experience in the customer service field which served him well while employed as a security guard at New Milford Hospital. He is a former personal trainer and Martial Arts Instructor. Mr. Potenziani was previously employed as an elementary school security guard in Norwalk before joining the school safety team at Danbury High School. Mr. Potenziani departed DHS as a supervisor in charge of several school safety advocates located at one of the largest high schools in CT.  Please welcome Jim to our school.

Winter Recess Guidelines

We believe it is very important for the students to be able to go outside and get some fresh air and exercise as much as possible. With the exception of rainy days or very cold temperatures (below 20 degrees), our students go outside every day, so students should come to school dressed warmly.  If there is snow on the ground we let the children play in it during recess, but only if they are dressed appropriately with coat, boots, and gloves. If they are not dressed in the appropriate clothing, we will ask them to stay on the blacktop where there is still plenty of dry ground for them to play on and have fun, and keep their feet dry.

Kindergarten Registration

A request from Hurlbutt – if you have an incoming kindergarten student for the 24-25 school year, you can begin the registration process.  Follow this link to our district website to register.  Children are eligible for kindergarten if they are 5 on or before September 1, 2024.  Registration

WIS Upcycled Winter Ski Village:

This is an optional, fun opportunity for students to use their creativity to create a house or ski chalet with materials found around the house. The houses will be used to create a winter village display in the WIS Library. Students should use materials such as cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks, chopsticks etc, and students are encouraged to be as creative as they like. The houses can be dropped off to the WIS library throughout the month of January where they will be part of the winter village display for everyone to enjoy. Attached is a flier with more information about the project and ideas on how to participate.

Important Dates:

January 15: No School, Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Feb 2: Early dismissal for professional development. 12:35 p.m. dismissal

Feb 19-23: School is closed for winter break

Feb 26: No School, Professional Development for teachers

Warm regards,

Patricia Falber
