Principal’s Message

Welcome to Weston Intermediate School. WIS prides itself on being a caring community of learners that fosters pride in each student’s developing abilities while promoting social development. We build the essence of community each day in every classroom touching all of our students. We know that no meaningful learning can happen unless students feel safe. Building on where Hurlbutt left off, we use the Responsive Classroom approach to teach children to act responsibly, take responsibility, and treat each other with respect.

Our teachers use a variety of innovative instructional approaches such as Workshop to instill a love of learning and build confident, competent students. This approach naturally differentiates the learning for all students, to meet the individual needs of each child, and to challenge them to be their best. Our goal is not only to promote literacy, but more importantly, to inspire our students to read and write as part of daily life. We focus on enhancing students’ ability to think critically and creatively, and to be innovative problem solvers and proficient communicators; to speak and write effectively and clearly – across all subjects. 

WIS students also have a wealth of programs that we believe will enrich their appreciation of the arts, music, physical well-being, science, and sports. For example, we have a program teaching students how to use and not abuse technology, and a musical that draws over 130 students to the stage. As we teach our students how to become successful citizens, they learn that we do not tolerate bullying at any level on the school grounds, the bus, or any school related activity, nor do we look the other way. You will see that not only do we want our students to feel safe and their parents to know they are safe, we want all of our students, teachers, parents, and community to take pride in all we do each day.

At WIS we are fortunate to have a strong, active PTO and we encourage all parents to participate. I also urge you to take an active part in what your child is required to do at home and to support independent reading. The road to a successful adulthood starts early. We strive every day to make sure that while the path may not be easy at times, what is learned at WIS will inspire a student to do the best work possible at every stage.

There is a lot of information contained in this website and more will come each month from our school newsletters. In addition, you should always know that all of us at WIS believe in open communication. We are here for your students and for you.

Assistant Principal’s Message

I am thrilled to be a member of the Weston Intermediate School community. This is my third year as the Assistant Principal at WIS and I am excited and energized for a great year!

At WIS, we create a caring environment where students feel safe to take risks and challenge themselves. Our collaborative staff works closely  to meet the needs of all of our learners. Students at WIS are challenged on a daily basis to be resilient and flexible thinkers who are pushed to succeed. Our teachers utilize the Workshop model in their instruction which allows for focused and targeted instruction followed by independent work time coupled with small group instruction. Students at WIS learn in an environment focused on the concept that we are creating lifelong readers and writers that have ownership in their learning. Our staff also promotes an environment where students are encouraged to think critically, communicate their learning and be proficient problem solvers.

At WIS, the social and emotional needs of our students are of the utmost importance. The use of Responsive Classroom at WIS creates a safe, joyful and engaging learning environment where all students feel a part of our community. Also our WIS Behavioral Expectations include personal accountability, respect, integrity, discipline, and effort which are woven into all  academic areas across the school day.

When I am not at WIS, you can find me spending time with my family in Fairfield. I have four children and am an active member of my community. I am also an avid runner, tennis player, football fanatic, and baker when the time allows.

  The WIS on-line SCHOOL DISMISSAL MANAGER  will start operation on September 10, 2019.  For the first 2 weeks of school, students will need a written note for any alternate PM dismissal plans.  WIS families will be contacted by email in late August.  (All daily dismissal changes at WIS MUST be entered by 1:00pm on the day of the alternate transportation/activity.  The deadline is 10:00am on early dismissal days.)
