Dear WIS Families,

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. It was so nice (before our weather got too cold to go outside) to watch so many of our students having fun playing in the snow. Just a reminder, that when there’s snow on the ground we ask that students follow our winter weather guidelines (boots, coat, snow clothes, hats and gloves/mittens) to help them stay warm and dry while at recess.

Here are some updates and important announcements, please take a moment to read. Thank you:

Arrival and Dismissal Help:

We are asking families for help in order to make sure our students stay safe during arrival and dismissal. Students should not be dropped off at school earlier than 8:15 a.m., which is the start of school, unless they have an early morning activity such as math olympiads or a music ensemble. If students are dropped off before 8:15 they need to stay outside which can be cold and/or rainy and there is no adult supervision outside at that time, which is a safety concern.

In the afternoon, we have many students who are walking and then being picked up at other locations on School Road. For safety reasons, we ask that students not go to Central Office for pick-up. That can be a very busy location with lots of traffic and trucks,  and there isn’t any adult supervision to cross students or wait while their ride arrives. If at all possible, students should be picked up at either WIS or Hurlbutt where we have adequate adult supervision to keep them safe.

School of Distinction:

At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting I was privileged to share that WIS was named as a School of Distinction based on High Performance and High Growth of all students in both English Language Arts and Math. This recognition comes from Connecticut’s Next Generation Accountability System which uses a broad set of indicators that go beyond test scores to provide a multi-factor perspective of school performance and student growth over time. In order to be eligible for this recognition, a school needs to be in the top 10% of schools and cannot have any outlier achievement gaps in ELA, Math or Science. We are so proud of the hard work of our students and staff which made it possible to receive this recognition.

Winter Concert Time:

This month all of our musical ensembles present a winter concert. Last week, the fourth and fifth grade choruses were the first ensembles to perform to a standing-room only house. It was a wonderful concert and they were very deserving of the applause and standing ovation that they received. We are excited about our upcoming concerts and know they will have wonderful performances as well. Both concerts take place in the WIS Cafetorium and start at 7:00pm. All families are welcome to attend.

    Wednesday, January 24 – Grade 4 and 5 Orchestras,

    Thursday, January 25 – Grade 5 Band

Important Dates:

Feb 2: Early dismissal for professional development. 12:35 p.m. dismissal

Feb 19-23: School is closed for winter break

Warm regards,
