Dear WIS Families,
We held our last Back-to-School Night this week for grade 5 families on Tuesday evening. We are so happy that so many of you could attend these events. Your presence and participation is invaluable as we work together to support and inspire your child’s learning journey.
As a reminder, students in grades K-5 are not permitted to ride each other’s buses until Monday, September 30. This gives our students and drivers time to familiarize themselves with the route, students and their families. Once these routines and rides are well established, a student may ride home with a friend as long as your dismissal manager reflects this information. We cannot facilitate changes in plans or playdates scheduled during the school day.
School Climate Survey:
Earlier this week you should have received a letter from Tracy Edwards, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, which included the link to the Family Survey. The survey is now available for your input and will be available until October 11. We encourage you to participate as this gives us valuable information. For your convenience, here is the link again.

Hispanic Heritage Month:
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month starting September 15th through October 15th, the office of Congressman, Jim Himes, is holding an essay contest to honor Hispanic/Latinx icons and their legacy. The attached letter has information for any students interested in participating. Please contact Congressman Himes' office directly should you have any questions. Submissions must be received in their office by Friday, October 4th.
Math and Reading Curriculum Information:
Our instructional programs are well underway at this point in September. We hope that Back to School Night gave you valuable information about our school, classroom and curriculums. The two attached letters will give you additional details about our math and language arts curriculum.

At WIS our curriculum instructional leaders are Alex Bluestein for language arts/social studies and Erin Barlow for math/science. They support all of our teachers and are a valuable resource for families.
Food Drive:
Our first community service project this year is a Food Drive for the Weston Food Pantry. We sent bags home with the students on Friday along with a suggested list of donations. We will be collecting food items through Monday, September 30. Any and all donations are welcome.
Sneakers for P.E.:
A reminder that students need to wear sneakers in order to participate in P.E. Please make sure to check your child’s schedule so that sneakers are always worn on those days. If it’s easier, an extra pair of sneakers can be kept in your child’s cubby so if they forget they won’t miss out on a P.E. class.
Important Dates:
September 23: Food Drive Begins
September 25: 9:00am HES/WIS PTO meeting, WIS Cafetorium
September 30: Students may now ride on a friend’s bus. Please ensure to update Dismissal Manager with this information if your child is going to ride on a different bus. Please limit this to no more than two friends riding home with a friend to prevent overcrowding.
October 3: School closed for Rosh Hashanah
October 7 - October 11: WIS Book Fair
October 10: Picture Day
October 11: Early dismissal at 12:35 p.m. for staff professional development
October 14: School Closed for Indigenous People/Columbus Day
We greatly appreciate your ongoing support and partnership in making this school year a positive experience for everyone.
Warm Regards,
Patricia Falber
Principal
