Weekly Family Update!

Posted Date: 11/18/2024

November 17, 2024

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. We have been fortunate to enjoy mild weather so far this fall. Now that the temperatures are starting to dip, please consider having your child dress in layers for school. Temperatures vary throughout the day so students should be able to adjust as needed.  We do bring the students outside everyday for recess, unless it’s raining, so students should dress accordingly. Please label each item of clothing so that if they misplace it we can return lost items. Our lost and found has many pieces of clothing right now without names.

A big thank you to everyone who donated to our Veterans Day Drive. We collected almost 8 bins of items, all of which will be donated to Homes for the Brave, an organization in Bridgeport which supports our veterans and service people.

Please take a moment to read through some other important updates:

WIS named a “School of DIstinction”

Last week we received wonderful news that the Intermediate School was again named as a “School of Distinction” by the Connecticut State Department of Education. The state evaluates school and district performance using a comprehensive set of 12 indicators to provide a more holistic and encompassing view of the district and its schools.  We were recognized for high performance and high growth for all students in ELA and Math, and high growth for high needs students in both ELA and math as well. In addition we were named a Category 1 school for High Overall Performance - only seven schools achieved recognition in five of the six possible areas (out of 151 schools), which places WIS in an elite group.

Parent Event, “Social Media and Our Kids”

In the district October newsletter, Lisa Barbiero, our superintendent, highlighted an upcoming parent event that will be taking place this Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Join us for an evening with Max Stossel, an award-winning artist and the founder of Social Awakening, an organization dedicated to helping young people navigate and thrive in today’s digital landscape. Max will share essential insights into the influence of social media on our children and how we can support their social and emotional well-being in the modern world. This event aligns with our district’s commitment to fostering a supportive school climate and enhancing the social-emotional wellness of our students, families, and staff. We believe that a well-rounded academic experience includes equipping our students with tools for emotional resilience, and this presentation will offer valuable perspectives for parents and guardians. A special thank you to all of the Weston School PTOs for sponsoring this important event and making this opportunity possible for our community. Find out more at www.socialawakening.org

Dismissal:

While we know having students walk to Hurlbutt at dismissal is an option for those who have a sibling at Hurlbutt, recently we have been informed that the practice of having students walk through the Hurlbutt bus circle to meet parents behind that school has been causing disruptions to their dismissal. It can impede on the efficiency and safety of the Hurlbutt dismissal as staff members of younger students get their students to their dismissal location. The pathway through the north house playground is now open so students should be using that pathway to go to the front of the school to meet parents. We kindly recommend that you utilize the WIS parent car pick-up line.
