Weston Intermediate School

May 11, 2025
Dear WIS Families,
Happy Mother’s Day!
A big thank you to the PTO and all the parent volunteers who helped make last week's Teacher Appreciation Week such a success! The food was absolutely amazing and so appreciated—everything from bagels and coffee to tasty snacks and the delicious Friday luncheon. You truly outdid yourselves! A special thank you also goes to the parents who volunteered to cover recess duties for our teachers. Despite the many rainy days, the kids had fun, and your support gave our staff some much-needed time—thank you
There is so much happening in our school and our community this month. This coming week is the district art show! We hope you can join us to celebrate all of the amazing artwork our students created under the guidance and support of our talented and dedicated art teacher, Cady Carroll. See below for details about the show.
Early Dismissal
This Friday is an early dismissal day for teacher professional development. Please have all Dismissal Manager updates completed by 10 a.m. All grades dismiss at 12:35 p.m.
Art Jam
Please join us for Weston’s annual Art Jam on Thursday, May 15, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
Every student will have artwork on display and be sure to visit the 3-D art gallery in art room 117. Select student art work will also be on display in the main office. We look forward to a wonderful evening exhibiting the talents of our students. Hope to see you there.
Spring Climate Family Surveys
You received a district email earlier this week from Tracy Edwards announcing the climate survey dates for the district. Below is the link again and important information about the surveys for your convenience. The climate surveys provide an opportunity to gather comprehensive data on the experiences and perceptions of students, staff, and the broader community. Your feedback is important to us. The survey opened on Sunday, May 4th, and we are asking you to complete it by Saturday, May 31st:
Family Survey Link: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/westonpsct/3331446183/surveys
If you have more than one child in the Weston Public Schools, please complete one survey for each child. The survey is anonymous. Students (grades 3 and up) and staff in each of our buildings will complete Panorama Education student and staff climate surveys during the month of May. We hope you feel comfortable answering the questions honestly to help us review our programs and ensure our students feel physically, socially, and emotionally safe in our schools.
The WIS Daily News Needs YOU!

May is a significant month for recognizing and celebrating the diverse tapestry of our community and world. We are excited to embrace this opportunity by observing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month throughout May, along with the United Nations' World Day for Cultural Diversity on May 21st. Our WIS Daily News team plans to interview students and their families throughout the month for our morning news show. Please consider sharing your family’s traditions by signing up to be interviewed here!
Final Session of Book Club - Come Share Your Ideas!

Thank you to the parents who have helped us explore Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation and engaged with us in insightful discussions. We now turn our attention to the most vital part: action. We've learned about the challenges our students face, and now we want to hear your brilliant ideas for fostering their emotional and mental well-being right here at WIS. What practical steps can we take as educators, parents, and community members? What changes can we advocate for in our schools and beyond? Let's come together to brainstorm ideas that can make a real difference in our students' lives. Please join us for our final session of our book club on Wednesday, May 21st, in the WIS Library. Whether you've joined our previous discussions or are new to our conversation, please know all are welcome to this final book club session!
The WIS Feel Good Club - Session Tomorrow!

Back by popular demand...the WIS Feel Good Club has been extended through the end of May! The next session of the WIS Feel Good Club is tomorrow, Monday, May 12th, at 8 AM in the WIS Library. All students are welcome. This club was created by a team of five 5th-graders, and their mission is to offer a calm, fun space for all WIS students to kick off their week with positivity and friendship. Please do not drop off your child prior to 8 AM.
Wait Until 8th
The Wait Until 8th pledge—in which families commit to delay giving smartphones to kids until the end of 8th grade—is active in Weston. Over the last year, families at HES and WIS have signed, including about 30% of the current 5th grade class. Parent-organizers would love to continue the effort as we head to WMS.
More information has surfaced about the impact of smartphones and social media on children's mental health and development—Jonathan Haidt's book "The Anxious Generation" has presented findings on depression, anxiety, bullying and suicide rates. The benefits of delaying smartphones can be especially powerful for our rising middle schoolers as they face the emotional rollercoaster of puberty, social pressures, etc.
This is, of course, a personal choice for each family, but organizers are sharing information to make parents aware and to build solidarity.
